R&D Membrane Distillation | Final Thesis
within the scope of a 6-month internship

Your motivation:
SolarSpring GmbH and is an internationally active company in the development of modules and systems for membrane distillation (MD). The application of the process in seawater desalination has been well researched within several, publicly funded projects in the last years and tested by pilot systems in the field. Now, the potential of membrane distillation is to be considered and evaluated for other application areas as well, in order to be able to address the new requirements with adapted module concepts.

Your tasks:
Membrane distillation is a hybrid process, which is positioned between membrane processes and evaporation processes. It has a hydrophobic membrane as a physical separation boundary through which mass transport can only pass in gaseous form. As with the evaporator processes that have been in use for many years, there are different methods of heat recovery within the system.

Many industrial processes generate considerable amounts of wastewater containing high concentrations of inert salts. The discharge of high salt loads into surface waters represents a major burden on the ecosystem, especially if they are used for drinking water production. Efforts are therefore needed to reduce salt loads. Against this background, from the industry’s point of view, there is a need for action to research and develop new, environmentally friendly and economically viable processes for the purification, desalination and utilization of salts or purified concentrated salt solutions.

One possible solution is concentration with membrane distillation. Since this application brings new requirements for the technology, a series of basic investigations are necessary, which primarily relate to increasing the process efficiency using vacuum. An existing test rig has to be modified and commissioned for this purpose in order to investigate and evaluate the resistance of the membrane materials to unwanted wetting.

The work is designed to take 6 months to complete. Practical knowledge in handling tools and an independent and self-reliant way of working are absolute basic requirements for this task.

You would be responsible for the supervision of a membrane distillation plant for the conversion of ammonium into ammonium sulfate

Motivation

SolarSpring GmbH is an internationally active company in the development of modules and systems for membrane distillation (MD). The application of the process in seawater desalination has been researched within several, publicly funded projects in the last years and tested by pilot systems in the field. Now, the potential of membrane distillation is to be considered and evaluated for other application areas as well, in order to be able to respond to the new requirements with adapted module concepts.

Technology

Membrane distillation is a hybrid process that is positioned between membrane processes and evaporator processes. It has a hydrophobic membrane as a physical separation boundary through which only gaseous substances can pass. As with the evaporator processes that have been in use for many years, there are different methods of heat recovery within the system.

Task

Every day, municipal wastewater treatment plants treat wastewater from households and industry. A major challenge in this process is ammonia, which is harmful to the environment. At Solar Spring, we have developed a process that extracts ammonia from the digested waste. Not only is the ammonia removed from the wastewater, but it is also used to produce a nutritious fertilizer for agriculture. The process is now ready for the next large-scale implementation. Here, at the beginning of the internship, you would supervise the construction and installation of the plant at our company and later at the Erbach wastewater treatment plant. Once set up on site at the sewage treatment plant, the following activities are on the agenda:

Planning and conducting experiments
Monitoring and evaluation of the plant
Regular spectroscopic and chemical analyses of samples
Troubleshooting and troubleshooting of the plant

Requirements

Bachelor degree in environmental engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering or chemistry
Independent working style and solution-oriented approach
Language skills: German
Driving license class B

The internship is designed for a full-time position of 6 months, starting at the beginning of June and will mainly take place at the site of the wastewater treatment plant in Erbach. The internship is to take place in cooperation with another student:in. A joint application with one of the students is possible. The internship will be remunerated.
